When my friend Dan sent me these pictures of what he’d been up to this weekend, I couldn’t wait to share them here! This post is pretty image-heavy because of this.
He was fed up with his cluttered apartment, and declared war on the clutter Saturday night.
Here’s what his home office looked like before:
The main room (before)
The bookshelf (before)
The floor (before)
The desk top (before)
I encourage you to click the photos to visit the Flickr pages – Dan has left some interesting (and humorous) notes on the photos about what all that stuff is!
After some hard work (and, hopefully, a good night’s sleep), here’s how the office looks now:
The main room (after)
The bookshelf (after)
The floor (after)
The desk top (after)
Wow, such a difference, isn’t it? Looks like Dan can get some actual work done in there now, not to mention being able to locate important documents when he needs them!
He could probably tame those tangles of cables with some black binder clips, though!
Thank you for sharing this with us, Dan!
If you’d like to share your own decluttering progress, feel free to let me know. I can’t promise to publish every single one (I have no idea what kind of response, if any, this will receive), but I’ll do my best! Perhaps this could become a regular feature in the blog.
As always, you can also add your own photos to the ClutterCubed Flickr pool! I’d love to see them!

Thanks for featuring my office in your blog. I’m really happy with the results and I hope this will inspire some of your other readers to take the plunge. Now I just need to start working on my living room….
Thanks for sharing the pics!
I know I’m usually inspired by the decluttering success of others!
How long did it take you to clean up the office, by the way?
I didn’t really keep track of the time, but it was basically all done during my spare time on Sunday. I would say it probably took a few hours in total. I tried to strike a good balance between a superficial throw-everything-into-a-box decluttering and a true put-everything-in-its-place decluttering.
Now the only thing left to declutter are the cables and the box on the back!
Nice job!
Yeah… if you can believe it, that box in the back is my GTD “in” box, or at least that’s what it’s supposed to be. In reality it’s probably more like a “stuff” box since it will probably take me weeks to empty it, and anything really urgent or important has already been placed in a non-GTD cheater “urgent/important” box.
All the organization and produtivity methods only work at cruise speed. The beggining is always difficult. I began recent decluttering my e-mail inbox and it takes time.
From 5000 messages in the inbox i’m near one tenth of it!

if the percentages on your blog are current, you should find great motivation to tackle the remaining 90& of your office after these photos! good for you dan.

Well, the percentages on the blog show my own progress, not Dan’s. I think he has a lot more than 10% done on his office.
Great job on that office!!
I really need to get busy on my office!! I have papers and clutter in there that need to go. I have been busy in other parts of the house and really have neglected the office.
Why is one of the monitors sideways?
Good job on the room.
Thanks!
I keep one monitor in portrait orientation so that if I want to view or edit a portrait-oriented document (which is actually most of the time!) I can do it easily. Also, most websites are better viewed in that orientation, with a few notable exceptions.
If fact, I spend so much time on the portrait-oriented monitor that really it’s the other monitor that’s “sideways” as far as I’m concerned. I use the landscape-oriented monitor for the odd time when I need to view or edit something in landscape orientation, or when I need to see two large things at once. I also usually keep my e-mail client open in that monitor so I can see it easily while doing other things (which is not very GTD of me…).
Before I bought the second monitor, I kept my one monitor in portrait mode most of the time, and only rotated it when I really needed to see something in landscape mode. Now it’s just a quick drag and drop from one screen to the other, rather than having to bother to rotate the screen and the picture.
This actually inspired me to sort my desk out, thanks!
