Start to Declutter Today

Topics: Psychology of Clutter

Pick up something today.

It can be anything. Just pick up one thing that’s acting as clutter and put it away. Do it right now. I’ll wait.

That’s the first step in getting rid of clutter, but it’s one that seems very difficult for many people.
It’s basic, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The first step is often the hardest, because sometimes things seem hopeless. You feel like you’ll never be able to clean up your clutter, that there’s just no point because it’ll just get messy again later.

Just focus on picking up one item and putting it away, instead of trying to do everything at once. Focus on a small thing that you can do right now, instead of trying to tackle the big picture. Starting small means making progress instead of being frozen by fear or doubt.
Go for it!

The next few posts here on Clutter Cubed will be guest posts and filler, since I’m going to be incredibly busy running Con-G (that’s also why this post is late, sorry folks!). Thanks to those who sent in guest posts! I’m still looking for one more if anyone is interested in writing a guest post to appear on Clutter Cubed.

I did :-) I picked up the files in the home office and decided that I was tired of looking at piles and piles of nothing laying around. So the files in the cabinet that are as old as 1994 are going to the box in the garage, the current files are going into the file cabinets and all I need now is a miraculous space inside the drawers to put the rest of the piles that are not folders.

    Well, it was a start.

I totally agree. Start with one item and it will make you feel great. So great that you may actually do more!!

I am trying to throw 3 things away each day (paper clutter, old junk mail, magazines that have already been read).
I try to find a home for some wayward item each day.
I am also trying to keep up on dishes and general housework as that makes the house look less cluttery as well.
Also, I subscribe to the one item in one item out(I bought a book yesterday so I need to get rid of a book) I am currently trying to only buy books that I will reread(favorite author) or use as reference (WWII, China, Egypt, Japan, ect…).

Remember, “a journey starts with a single step” (I can’t remeber who actually stated that but it is a good quote to use, especially when decluttering.

I did it! I got rid of 4 things today. A ball cap I never wear, a penknife that got replaced with a better one, a hoodie with a hole in it and a broken tripod.
