I follow a lot of blogs. 58, in fact. Perhaps not an enormous number, but it feels like a lot.
Some are about clutter, some are about decorating, some are about finances, business, food, and some are the personal blogs of friends.
I use Google Reader to keep track of them all via RSS. I don’t usually click through to a blog unless I want to leave a comment. I can read post from many different blogs in a short span of time, and they are all neatly sorted by category (would you believe it?).
Sometimes though, it just gets to be too much, especially if I go away for a day or two. When I logged in this morning, I had 219 unread blog posts. Yikes!
I’m going to declare RSS Bankruptcy. It’s almost the same as email bankruptcy, except no one will really notice if I don’t reply to a blog post.
I’m just going to hit the “mark all as read” button and be done with it.
I’m sure there are some terrific blog posts sitting unread in there. While I’m a tiny bit sad that I won’t read them, I know I won’t be able to read 219 blog posts in a reasonable amount of time. Some of you guys are quite prolific!
There. Done!
Now I can start fresh. My RSS reader is now clutter-free and I’ve saved the time I would have spent reading old posts.
Have you ever wiped all unread items in an attempt to clean up your inbox?

Heh, just wait till you have more than a thousand unread posts. Then it just says ‘1000+’.
I’ve been decluttering my RSS feed for a while. Now I usually have 50-100 posts waiting for me every time I open Google Reader, but I just read the ones that sound interesting and skip the rest (J + K is your friend here).
Haha! I guess I’m glad I didn’t let it get up to over 1000 then!
Have the same problem. I used to be subscribed to 800+ RSS Feeds. And now trying to clean up this mess. So far i’ve got 546 =/
Whoa! I’d never be able to keep up with so many! Good luck!
I’ve been in the same situation !! I’ve managed to streamline my sites down to about 25-30, but still after a few days of being “offline” I don’t feel like weeding through 100+ new posts. If it’s something important I know I’ll stumble across it again at some point.
Mark All as Read + “click” = time saved !
I DO think that using Reader or other RSS reader is a great way aggregate sites you visit regularly.
Great site by the way !! Keep up the fantastic work !!

I have done that with my e-mail occasionly. Just get rid of everything and start over!!!
Dave, same here. I’ve been taking the time to actually unsubscribe to emails coming my way instead of just deleting them. And making good use of filters for the rest. It feels great.
Yeah…I “follow” 60 blogs myself and I find that, about once a month, I have to do the old Mark All as Read. I think that I should probably not follow so many blogs but, like you, I’m afraid I’ll miss something. Can’t spend all day reader other peep’s shizzle, though.

I have 100+ blogs added to my GReader. Sometimes it sums up 300 or 400.
I usually sort to all unread posts of a blog and then I move to the next one. If I have time for it I read the entire post and that’s it. If the time is lacking I read the summary of the posts and if it interests me I save the link to Read it later on “Read it later” (http://readitlaterlist.com/) or e-mail myself the link.
I prefer that option than to jump over some interesting posts! If I did that I wasn’t reading this!!
Ahh, falling behind on blogs. I do this quite often. But I always resist the “Mark All Read” button, because there are a few gems I actually don’t want to miss. (I catch up on these by reading 1 or 2 more posts than they post each day, so I catch up slowly over time.)
Still, I DEFINITELY go to some feeds and mark all of a specific blog read. Hmm, that site I read once a month has 50 posts since I last caught up? Yeah, let’s just call it a miss and restart the count!
I follow about 1000 blogs and I do it ALL THE TIME hahahhahaha
