Ugh! Some days, I really just wish What Not to Wear would swoop in and save me from my own clothes (Clean Sweep would be too much to hope for ). I have too many, and I know I don’t wear them all. I’d love someone to step into my life, toss out all my clothes, and buy me news ones that I’d actually wear.

Hoarder Problem: I keep clothes that fit me when I was 2 sizes larger.I don’t wear them, but I hang on to them because if I get rid of them I won’t have them “in case I need them”.

Apparently, the hoarding part of my brain skims over the fact that since I don’t wear them, I obviously don’t need them (and even if I did need them, they wouldn’t fit right anyway!)

Clutter Fact: I have more clothes than my dresser can fit, so much of my clothes sit on the floor next to it (admittedly, it’s a crummy dresser that doesn’t hold much, the drawers only open half way, and weighs a tonne to boot). It’s ridiculous, and I hate it. It makes the room an instant mess, and the clothes get wrinkled.

This weekend, my personal challenge is to get rid of at least 2 bags of clothing. This should cut it down a bit, and maybe I can wrangle more of the clothes I do wear into the dresser!

Try it too, if you like! Get rid of some of the clothes that you no longer wear. Do it this weekend!

I’m going to keep a running total of the money and time costs of clutter in my life, to illustrate how quickly these can add up and how they can impact your life. At the end of each month, I’ll tally the results and we will see exactly how much clutter is costing me, and try to reduce those numbers to nothing.

January is only 11 days old, and already my clutter has had a measurable negative impact in my life.

Yesterday alone, being messy and cluttered cost me $11.60 and 50 minutes of my time. I had misplaced the two packs of serger needles that I had just bought before the holidays. I spent about a half hour looking everywhere I could think of for them, and an additional 20 minutes running to the sewing supply store to buy another two packs of needles.
I still haven’t found the original needles I bought. That $11.60 could certainly have been put to better use than buying a duplicate of something I already had!
